Those that like wreck diving will enjoy Vis. With its maritime history going back more than 2,000 years there is plenty of evidence of voyages gone wrong on the seabed for divers to explore.
During WWII Vis was an important Allied base and a small airfield was constructed in 1944, initially to give a lifeline for damaged bombers attempting to return to their base in Italy after raids on German occupied mainland Yugoslavia. Sometimes they did not make it even this far.
